From previously doing my preliminary task to doing my main task my development in the production of producing a sample of a magazine has improved.
When I first used Photoshop for my preliminary task I did not understand how to use it correctly, so my preliminary task was a bit of an experiment of using the software. As I had not used this programme before I did not know what each tool did. However, as my knowledge grew of Photoshop I was able to produce a better standard of work in producing my main task. When I produced my preliminary task I only used the basic tools of Photoshop because of my lack of knowledge of the programme. However, as I came to produce my main task I was able to use other tools making my magazine look more professional. When I made my preliminary task I used basic skills on Photoshop such as the text tool, paint bucket and a few others. But, when it came to make my main task I could use tools such as the colour replacement tool, quick selection and others. You can see my development in the knowledge from my college magazine to my music magazine through the images of the finished products. On my music magazine’s featured article page I decided to use the colour replacement tool and have the picture black and white so that it looked like a more professional image that would appear in a music magazine.
From looking at other music magazines I was able to get inspiration for my own magazine. I took inspiration for my contents page from the magazine ELLE where they used lots of images on their contents page. Although, ELLE is a fashion magazine and showed a lot of images on clothing and make-up instead I used images of artists, musically themed it. I was able to use Photoshop to use the layers for the fonts I wanted for my magazine making it appeal to my target audience. Through my ideas I was able to understand exactly what pictures, fonts, layout ECT that I wanted and knew how I could achieve the results I wanted. This was completely different to when I produced my preliminary task; I had a greater understanding of what my target audience want to see in my music magazine unlike.
On this image below is the preliminary task contents page on the right and the music magazine contents page for my music magazine on the left. As you can see there is a significant difference in the skills between the preliminary task and the main task.

As you can see on my college magazine the layout is rather simple, and looks like it has had minimal effort in comparison with my music magazines contents page. The contents page for the college magazine is in simple fonts for the writing used, it is also the same font throughout. The pictures are rather simple and are only of objects unlike my music magazine where i have used images of people. As my research into magazines progressed i intertwined the convensions used in magazines into my own work. On my music magazine i included the name of my magazine, which is a usual feature of a magazine. I also included the date of the issue and the number of the issue, i did not do this for my college contents page, this shows that my research into magazines has progressed from the two productions.

As you can see the development in my skills in using photoshop have developed quite alot if you compare my college magazine front cover (right) with my music magazine front cover (left). One difference is the music magazine cover looks more realistic as i have included a bar code, a price and a date. These features are usual for a magazine, in order for them to be sold in shops. The fonts used in my music magazine cover differ and i have used a variety in showing the contents of the magazine. However, on my college cover there is only one font used throughout. This shows my knowledge has grown since i have looked at other music magazines as they tend to use a variety of fonts on the covers of their magazines. I have also used a few colours on the front cover unlike my college magazine where i have only used one colour.
