For research into my college magazine I participated in making a questionnaire to find out what the target audience would like to see in their college magazine. This would give me influence into what I would need to provide when considering things to put into my magazine. By using my target audience input when thinking about designs for the magazine I would be able to please them and make them become interested in it.
From the information received back from my questionnaire on college magazines, I found that 95% of the respondents did not read a college magazine. As this was a predictable response, the questionnaire was designed around finding out what would make a college magazine interesting enough that the respondents would be willing to read it. One question was asked specifically to what the respondents would like to see in a college magazine. This specific question gave a list of a variety of subjects that could be put into a college magazine. The most popular responses to this question were; Jobs, Gigs, Cinema Listings and Facebook updates. Other interests from this question are; Fashion, Gossip and Agony Aunt Pages. This gives us a great outlook onto what college students would like to see in a college magazine, it gives us an insight into what would need to be put into my magazine.
From other questions in my questionnaire it was discovered that most people are not willing to pay for a college magazine. However, 25% of responses said that they would possibly pay up to 50p. This would mean that the magazine would have to find other sources in making money for the production of the magazine. The magazine would need to rely more on advertising throughout the magazine to produce the needed funds. These advertisements would be related to subjects mentioned in the magazine or to do with college work/life. Other thoughts to the idea of financing the college magazine are to charge a small amount like 20p per issue so that the magazine is easily affordable.
Another question in the questionnaire enabled me to find out how often respondents would want the magazine to be issued. Most of my responses said that they would prefer to get the magazine monthly. However, 80% of my responses said that they would read the college magazine weekly or monthly. To hit a higher audience it would be a good idea to make the magazine be issued fortnightly, this will enable most of the readers to be happy.
The questionnaire enabled me to find out what the magazine would need to make it more appealing to college students. Responses to this question, that specified in making the magazine become more appealing, suggested more colour and pictures. This would make it less informal and make it appeal to the college students. One of the responses found in this question is that the college magazine needs more publicity. This response would cause considerations in how the college magazine would be networked, as most people do not know that a college magazine exists. From this question I also found that respondents were not interested in having the following topics in the college magazine; Sudoku, Chess club, world news and TV reviews. This gives me the information I need when considering the input into my magazine. I would not want to put these subjects in because my target audience are not interested in them.
